What is this?
Walking tour co-led by Heidi Fuhrman and Peter Nagy.
Red Hook is a fascinating historical section of Brooklyn that is filled with cobblestone streets and wharves. The waterfront hosts ancient brick warehouses that you can walk around and inside -- some gentrified and others still lost in the past. There are remarkable views of the Statue of Liberty and ships in port. And there are rusting doors and artifacts. It is a dreamscape to practice urban photography. Last year, we emerged with a beautiful collaborative slideshow that we presented to the Club, and we hope to do this once again.
The logistics are still being developed. Last year, we took Metronorth to Grand Central, and then the subway and then a ferry -- great fun along the way. This year, we may offer an option, if some members prefer, to drive to Red Hook (which has free street parking on a Sunday or at IKEA's nearby parking lot). We would pick a time and place to meet, and then start our walking tour. (If people arrive late, they can use cell phones to locate the group and catch up.)
Heidi and Peter both know Red Hook well from past trips, and will try to plan a walking route that passes by good photographic locations. They will also select a place to sit and snack (if weather is good, there is a good outdoor seating location; if weather is cold, they will find an indoor place). Plan for a full day.
This promises be a wonderful trip. Wear walking shoes. Bring water. Layer depending on weather. Travel light (consider a monopod). Contact Heidi or Peter for more details,
